What do I need to know about hazardous materials?

Baggage

Certain items, if brought onboard, must be transported in your carryon baggage.

Federal law forbids the carriage of hazardous materials such as aerosols, paints, fireworks, oxygen cylinders, and flammable liquids aboard aircraft in your checked or carryon baggage (unless regulations allow for passenger or crew member exception). E-cigarettes, vaporizers, power banks, external chargers, and spare lithium batteries are prohibited in checked baggage. Portable electronic devices (e.g., laptops, smart phones, tablets) should be carried in carryon baggage. If this is not possible, all devices must be turned off and protected from activation and damage. There are special exceptions for small quantities (up to 70 ounces total) of medicinal and toilet articles carried in your luggage and certain smoking materials (e.g., safety matches, common lighters) carried on your person.

Gate checked baggage requires special attention. See a Southwest® gate agent for additional info.

Lithium batteries, portable chargers/power banks, e-cigarettes, and lighters

Spare lithium batteries for portable electronic devices and cigarette lighters must be removed from checked or gate-checked baggage and carried onboard the aircraft. Because e-cigarettes are designed to operate by creating heat, they are not permitted in checked baggage and must be transported in carryon baggage only. E-cigarette use is forbidden onboard aircraft. E-cigarette regulations vary by country. Check the official government website for each country you're traveling to or from to confirm current requirements.
