Accessible Travel Assistance

Escort and navigation assistance is available for Customers with disabilities from the airport curb to and from gates and between gates for connecting flights. To receive assistance, identify yourself and the type of assistance you require to a Southwest Employee when you arrive at the airport, at any connection points, and when you land at your destination.

Once onboard and prior to departure, our Flight Attendants will conduct an individual safety briefing upon request. Additionally, they will help you lift and retrieve carryon items, stow mobility aids, and identify and open food packages if you make them aware that your need for assistance is due to a disability. Our Flight Attendants will also help you move throughout the cabin and to or from the lavatory (but will not assist with services inside the lavatory).

For those who are deaf or hard of hearing, we will establish alternate methods of communication with you upon request in the airport and onboard so you can receive prompt access to the same information provided to others (e.g., boarding and baggage claim information, flight disruption information, flight safety information, etc.).

Note: We don't provide custodial care. If this type of care is needed during the flight, consider traveling with a ticketed caregiver or personal care attendant.

Customers are required to travel with a safety assistant in the following scenarios:

  • When the Passenger has a cognitive or developmental disability so severe that they are unable to comprehend or respond to safety related instructions.
  • When the Passenger has both a severe hearing and vision impairment and is unable to establish a means of communication with Southwest personnel sufficient to receive the safety briefing.
  • When the Passenger has a mobility impairment so severe that the passenger is unable to physically assist in their own evacuation during an emergency.

You can tell us in advance if you'll need assistance by managing your reservation online.
