Accessible Travel AssistanceWheelchairs and other assistive devicesFlying with a wheelchair or mobility aid

We are happy to take care of your manual or battery-powered wheelchair or mobility aid during your travel. Due to the size of the aircraft cargo compartment doors (48 inches width x 35 inches height), some wheelchairs or mobility aids may not fit into the cargo compartment. Devices will be transported in an upright position to prevent damage to the controls and wheels. Wheelchairs and devices exceeding 500 pounds will not be accepted for travel.

Wheelchairs and devices with a height that exceeds 34 inches or a width or depth that exceeds 45 inches with parts removed/modified will not be accepted for travel. Please review our manual wheelchairs and mobility aids and battery-powered wheelchairs and mobility aids pages for more information.

Wheelchairs and mobility aids checked by Customers with disabilities are exempt from our standard checked baggage fees.

We suggest you print and complete our Wheelchair / Mobility Aid Information Form if you're checking a wheelchair or mobility aid. Present the completed form to the Southwest Customer Service Agent at the check-in counter.

Status notifications for checked wheelchairs and scooters

When a wheelchair or scooter is checked, we will send notifications when the device is loaded onto the plane and when the device is unloaded. The notifications will be sent by text or email based on the contact information provided at the time the reservation was booked.

Getting through security

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is responsible for the security screening process. Before screening, let the TSA officer know if you can't walk or stand unassisted.

Walkers, crutches, canes, or other mobility aids must undergo X-ray screening or be hand-inspected by a TSA officer if they cannot fit through the X-ray. Wheelchairs and scooters must be screened, including seat cushions and any non-removable pouches or fanny packs.

The TSA has a screening assistance program called TSA Cares that provides travelers with disabilities, medical conditions, and other special circumstances additional assistance during the security screening process. Visit the TSA website for more details.

You can tell us in advance if you'll be bringing your own wheelchair by managing your reservation or calling us.
