With Sip and Ship^™, Customers departing from California, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington may check one case of wine without paying the standard checked bag fee (weight and size limits apply). We define one case of wine as a single box or specialized wine suitcase containing up to 12 bottles and in compliance with Southwest Airlines® standard bag policy.

Who can participate?

You can use this benefit if all of the following are true:

• You are 21 years of age or older
• You are traveling within the United States
• Your trip departs from one of the eligible airports listed below

Eligible airports

California: 

• BUR, FAT, LAX, OAK, ONT, SNA, PSP, SMF, SAN, SFO, SJC, SBA, STS, LGB

Idaho:

• BOI

Oregon: 

• EUG, PDX

Washington: 

• SEA, GEG

How should I pack my wine?

• The wine package must weigh 50 lbs. or less and measure no more than 62 inches in size (length + width + height). Wheels and handles should be included when measuring.
• The contents must be properly packaged inside a sturdy, leak-proof container such as a corrugated box or a specialized wine suitcase with professional packaging. This primary shipping container must be of adequate strength to withstand material-handling​ processes associated with air travel
• The wine bottles must be placed inside a sealed, leak-proof, plastic bag with professional packaging designed to fit the proportions of the bottle to prevent breakage
• Additional leak-proof packaging including packing materials such as Styrofoam, molded foam inserts, cardboard liners, bubble wrap, and additional padding of glass packaging is strongly recommended
• Professional packaging by wine suppliers is acceptable as long as the contents have adequate cushioning and the packaging prevents leakage
• The top of the primary shipping container must not be sealed prior to Customer Service Agent (CSA) inspection at the airport. The CSA will seal the box upon approved inspection.
• If the wine is not adequately packaged, wine packaging is available for sale at our ticket counters.
• All alcohol is subject to TSA screening.

We don’t accept liability for breakage of liquids or fragile items in checked luggage even if transported in special packaging purchased from Southwest®. 

If I’m traveling to a participating location and plan to return with wine, can I check my empty wine suitcase/box for free on my outbound flight?

Sip and Ship™ Terms

Sip and Ship™ is available on select Southwest® flights departing from participating airports in Washington (SEA, GEG), Oregon (EUG, PDX), Idaho (BOI), or California (BUR, FAT, LAX, OAK, ONT, SNA, PSP, SMF, SAN, SFO, SJC, SBA, STS, LGB) to eligible U.S. destinations. Passengers must be 21 years of age or older. One (1) case of wine may be checked at no additional charge, provided it is in the original unopened container with the manufacturer’s label and securely packaged in a leak-proof bag with adequate professional packaging designed to fit the proportions of the bottle to prevent breakage. A “case” is defined as a single box or specialized wine suitcase containing up to twelve (12) bottles and weighing no more than fifty (50) pounds. Customers are required to follow the standard sizing policy for checked baggage, which is 62 inches in size (length + width + height). Wheels and handles should be included when measuring. Wine must be checked with a Southwest Customer Service Agent at the ticket counter. The top of the primary shipping container must not be sealed prior to Customer Service Agent inspection at the airport. Wine quantity limitations vary by state. Please check your state’s rules for applicable restrictions. Only select flights originating from the above listed states and airports qualify for this offer. Flights departing from non‑participating cities are not eligible and standard checked baggage fees will apply.
